Bodega Rose
Friends, Fried Chicken, and a Cozy Kitchener-Waterloo Vibe
Friends, Fried Chicken, and a Cozy Kitchener-Waterloo Vibe
Hi, I’m Maria. I’m a Kitchener-Waterloo mom who loves to cook, hang out with friends, and occasionally write. This Substack is where I write with no particular plan or agenda.
Consider this my warm, personal take on Bodega Rose in Waterloo, Ontario.
Sitting across from my friend Ana, I caught myself getting almost embarrassingly excited, the way I do when something feels new and alive. I was telling her how much I’ve been loving being part of my husband’s company, Element CPA, and how I’m still figuring out how to tell the brand story in a way that feels true, and fun, and human.
And then, almost in the same breath, I found myself talking about my own writing too. I’m finding a pace with creative writing, even if it’s slow. The important thing is that I’m excited about it, and I’m quietly chipping away at it, because at the end of the day I write because it brings me joy, not for any particular gain.
Today we had a wonderful evening at Bodega Rose. We were two families with kids aged four to six, and Bodega was incredibly family friendly. They made us feel genuinely welcome from the moment we arrived.
We came early since our kids are still small. When we came in, it was still light out, and in that light it genuinely looked like a French bistro. At that hour it also was not too busy. As our appetizers were served, people started to roll in. The restaurant slowly came alive, the sky darkened outside, and the ambiance shifted with it. The lighting was dim enough to feel warm and atmospheric, but still bright enough that you could comfortably see each other and have a real conversation.
Before long, the room was buzzing. The vibe feels like a modern, minimalist French bistro, and the energy of the space honestly made me feel like I was somewhere in Europe, not in Kitchener-Waterloo. Our server was extremely pleasant.
The food was delicious. The Korean fried chicken appetizer was absolutely bang on: the perfect balance of sticky, spicy, and sweet, with just a little char.
We ordered a handful of appetizers for the table, which our server encouraged, since sharing family-style is kind of their specialty. Honestly, everything we tried was delicious. The whipped ricotta with garlic confit and blistered tomatoes was an easy second favourite after the fried chicken. The other appetizers were lovely too.
For mains, we ordered the flatiron steak, and it was cooked perfectly. The fries were crispy and well-seasoned. The kids were happy with pasta and ice cream, which is all you can really ask for.
And the dessert menu. Simply wow. The espresso in my friend’s affogato was so aromatic, and the carrot cake Ana ordered was genuinely delicious. It tasted homemade in the best way: perfectly moist, not too sweet, with just a little salt. I honestly wish I wasn’t so full from everything else, because that dessert alone would have been worth it.
Overall, the food was amazing, and the energy, decor, and beautiful roses everywhere, right down to the bathroom, made the whole experience feel thoughtful and special. The bathroom was clean, very cool, and in keeping with the aesthetic of the place.
All in, it was the kind of evening that feels like a little reset: good food, warm lighting, happy kids, and that cozy, buzzy feeling you want to take home with you.

I’ve been meaning to check them out, thanks for sharing the details! I’ll be trying that fried chicken appetizer 😋
